I sported this look last week and after responses on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram I decided it would be a great opportunity to do my first ever 'what's on my face' type post!
This kind of angsty 90s/grunge makeup-look suits me perfectly because, as you may have noticed, I find it near impossible to smile for photos! It also suits me because my hair is pretty much always a complete mess. However my hair is when I wake up is, for the most part, how it stays. Of course that all becomes part of 'the look' when you're talking a bit of 90s grunge! This interpretation is pretty mild (read 'wearable'), but feel free to go nuts with it!
Lips: Tom Ford's delectable Black Orchid lipstick is both the focal point and inspiration for this look. I applied this luxurious shade with a lip brush, after first lining and filling in my lips with Rimmel's Purple Scandaleyes eye pencil.
Face: For foundation, the love affair continues with NARS Sheer Glow (Deauville). I mixed Collection's Lasting Perfection concealer (Shade 1), MAC's Select Cover-Up Corrector (NC23), and YSL's Touche Éclat pen to conceal and highlight the face. For contour, I applied e.l.f.'s Moondust eyeshadow to the hollows of my cheeks and slightly onto the temple. I then buffed this out with just a touch of my Sleek Contour Kit (Light). For blush, I found a touch of MAC's Breezy complimented the lips nicely.
Eyes: I filled in my brows with MAC's Cork eyeshadow instead of my usual Benefit Getway for a slightly softer look. For eyes, I applied a wash of MAC's Cork eyeshadow with a fluffy blending brush all over the lid and underneath the lower lashline, to add subtle definition to the eyes. I used a soft satin shadow, MUD's Dulce de Leche, to highlight the browbone. Using a small liner brush, I pushed MUD's Onyx into the base of my upper lashline to give the illusion of fuller eyelashes. On the inner corner of my eyes I used the tiniest amount of Maybelline's Pink Gold Color Tattoo to the top half (to add a bit of a twist) and MUD's Ice shadow was placed on the lower half. I finished the eyes off with Rimmel's nude liner and a few coats of Maybelline's 'The Falsies' mascara.
And that's the completed look! Surprisingly simple, given the amount of products I've listed! The key aspects are a deep vampy lip and a light/medium/dark brown (depending on your own colouring) washed over the entire lid, under the eyes and mascara. Of course you can chop and change the look to meet your needs. For instance, you could add a lot lot more dark eyeliner and smudging for a more dramatic impact.
For me though, this is a nice balance - for daytime makeup in a small village in the West of Ireland anyways!
Would you wear this kind of look? How would you make it your own?

Love the look, the whole grunge look is one of my favourites so I must try this out. That lipstick colour is gorgeous, it really suits you!

ReplyDeleteThere's a NARS counter in BTs in Dublin, but I'm not sure where else. I'm actually a Galwegian too - I ordered mine online after an hour of intense google swatching! :)
